About George

Halloween originates from the ancient tradition of Samhain which was celebrated on 31 October. People believed that the dead returned to earth on that night so lit bonfires and left food to appease unwelcome spirits

During the Middle Ages, the Church designated 2nd November as All Soul’s Day. People would visit the houses of wealthy families and pledge to pray for the souls of the homeowner’s ancestors in exchange for pastries

This led to ‘guising’, when people disguised themselves as ghosts or scary creatures while performing antics in exchange for food and drink. Rather than offering to pray, they would sing, recite a poem, tell a joke or perform another trick before collecting their treat
