100% pure beeswax is truly eco-friendly

Natural beeswax has incredible properties that makes it the ideal material for many eco-friendly home products. Beeswax is an integral part of the beehive that not only provides structure to the beehive but is a vital part of nature's original food storage. Beeswax burns at the highest temperature compared to other waxes (such as paraffin, soy or vegetable wax like rapeseed) so they make effective fire starters without any nasty chemicals.

That’s why we chose to sell 100% pure beeswax candles, beeswax wrap and eco-friendly fire starters

  1. Beeswax is a naturally occurring by-product of food pollination (and when beekeepers collect the surplus honey)

    • Beeswax is naturally a wax. The wax in paraffin, soy and palm candles have been through a chemical reaction in order to be turned into wax as they are originally oils

  2. Beeswax is the most eco-friendly wax for the environment, for animals and for you and family. Our beeswax is sustainable and renewable

    • Beeswax is made by honey bees and has the least impact on the local eco system (takes the least amount of land-space) unlike soy and palm tree plantations that cause devastating and irreversible effects to the local environment and animals; paraffin wax is chemically made from crude oil (a fossil fuel) which is non-renewable and not sustainable. When oils are turned into wax they require chemicals to solidify them; often these are very bad for the environment and especially awful when burnt as a candle as they emit the same toxic compounds as cigarettes! This includes benzene and formaldehyde which is particularly harmful when burnt in confined spaces such the living room and the bathroom

    • Oils that are turned into wax are often accompanied with candle wicks that contain zinc cores and lead cores- adding to the toxins that are released when burnt. Some people add paper-cores but this is not much better. It is possible to make a candle with a metal-free and paper-free wick but some people use these either to maximise profit or to compensate for a low level of candle making skill

  3. Natural beeswax is biodegradable

    • Biodegradable products are vital to a circular economy (zero-waste lifestyle)

Important information about how we prioritise the welfare of honey bees

  1. Ensuring the welfare of honey bees

  2. Maintaining the high quality of Honey Bee Candles products

  • The bees always have enough supplies of honey and beeswax. We only remove the surplus honey and beeswax. Honey bees are incredibly efficient creatures so store much more honey (and beeswax) than they actually use; more and more honey and beeswax would accumulate if left as honey and beeswax never expire- eventually leaving less space for the honey bee colony (which is not good for them)

  • Ethically-sourced, sustainably-sourced and cruelty-free beeswax; surplus honey is only collected at certain times of the year thus only the surplus beeswax is removed. Very minimal smoke (using eco-friendly fire starters and burning materials) is used to alert bees. Honey Bee Candles do not support a lot of smoke being used as it is not necessary and may cause the honey bees unnecessary stress

  • The majority of the beeswax we use is for our own use (no other company has it). In times of high demand, we source further beeswax from just over 20 miles (32km) from where we’re based- that way, all the honey bees always have enough honey and beeswax

Information about our Beeswax Candles

How our Honey Bee Candles are made: entirely handmade, always in small batches

100% pure beeswax candles by Honey Bee Candles

Our high level of handcrafted skill enables us to maintain traditional methods of candle making while keeping the consistency of high quality products that our customers have come to expect from our family business

Honey Bee Candles are 100% pure beeswax candles:

  • Honey Bee Candles are natural ionisers (see below for more information)

  • Honey Bee Candles are able to form “bloom” (see below for more information)

  • Honey Bee Candles are suitable for those with asthma

Our Candle Wax

  • All Honey Bee Candles only contain 100% pure beeswax.

    • No mixture of other waxes: no soy wax, no paraffin wax, no palm wax. No mixture of added oils (no coconut oil, no palm oil). Beeswax is a naturally occurring by-product of food pollination and honey production: beeswax is the most environmentally friendly candle wax and has been used for thousands of years.

    • Beeswax does not require chemicals or additives (wax hardeners) as other types of candle waxes do. If a paraffin/soy wax candle burns longer than a 100% pure beeswax candle of the same size and in the same conditions, it means that the paraffin/soy candle has been chemically hardened to make it burn longer or the flame will be cool, weak and small. Beeswax candles are best if you would like naturally eco-friendly candles

  • We filter the surplus beeswax straight from the beehive. This filtration process is done by hand: no bleaches; no chemicals; no dyes/colours

  • The beeswax that we use is a natural product so the aroma and colour of the candles may differ slightly from time to time (see below for the reason). This is what makes beeswax candles so interesting and unique

Completely Natural Beeswax Candles

  • No added artificial colours/dyes & no added artificial fragrance/scents

    • Honey Bee Candles are naturally coloured by pollen granules that the honey bees brush onto the beeswax in the hive and given their lovely aroma by the nectar from the flowers that the honey bees have foraged on. With the changing seasons, there will be a change in the flora which will result in a very slight change in the colour and aroma of the beeswax. This is a natural wonder

  • Completely cotton wicks. No metal cores (e.g. zinc, lead etc) or paper fillers

Beeswax Candles: The Flame

  • Honey Bee Candles are 100% pure beeswax candles which burn longer, cleaner and brighter than other “natural” wax candles like soy, palm or vegetable (e.g. rapeseed oil) wax.

    • The colour of the flame is on the same spectrum as sunlight

Natural Ionisers

Honey Bee Candles are 100% pure beeswax candles. Only 100% pure beeswax candles purify the air as they emit negative ions. Dust, pollen and pollution are airborne due to their postive ions so the negative ions of a burning beeswax candle neutralise them- leaving a lovely subtle honey aroma and a gently warmed room

In cities or dusty areas, you will be able to see the molten wax pool at the top of the candle start to darken: this is because when the airborne postive ions become neutalised, they become a complete molecule which is heavier than air so it becomes a solid

When a Honey Bee Candle has been burning long enough, you will be able to experience the difference: it’s sort of like a ray of sunshine, fresh ocean breeze or freshly cut green grass

If you start to burn Honey Bee Candles every day, the air in your home will be cleaner, sweeter and ultimately healthier than if you didn’t purify the air. For best results, ideally also vacuum carpets or wipe hard floors daily but a few times a week also works well. The more that you burn Honey Bee Candles, the greater the effect but you should start to notice a difference from the first burn. To start, try burning a Honey Bee Candle for three hours every day for a week. If you are new to beeswax candles, we recommend Benjamin, Lexi or the Bee Column along with a spiked candle stand to start your experience; it is important to have a candle stand

Bloom”

100% pure natural beeswax is the only type of natural wax that can be used for hand poured candles in its pure state. It is a really fascinating material as it is firm enough to allow us to create beautiful and elegant designs. 100% pure beeswax candles do not expire, go rancid; they do not “go off”. If stored in a cold room or near a window, a 100% pure beeswax candle will develop “bloom”. This is a white film that starts off as a thin layer and thickens with time- it looks like the first snow of winter. Many people love seeing “bloom” as it is proof that the candle is 100% pure beeswax. Mixtures of beeswax and other waxes are not able to form “bloom”. “Bloom” should not affect how the candle burns, how long it burns for and its natural subtle honey aroma. If you don’t like this, simply light your candle and the “bloom” will disappear as the candle warms up from the heat of its flame

Information about our Honey Bee Wrap

How our Honey Bee Wrap is made: entirely handmade, always in small batches

  • The average UK family creates 88 lbs (40kg) of plastic waste per year

Honey Bee Wrap is our version of beeswax wraps: we make it with all natural and completely food-safe materials

What are Beeswax Wraps?

Honey Bee Wraps are beeswax food wraps which are the sustainable, reusable and natural alternative to plastic wrap and aluminium foil. They are a plastic-free way to keep your food fresher for longer and perfect for a zero-waste lifestyle. They are naturally adhesive, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal without any nasty chemicals. Each beeswax wrap is handmade by us (a family business) using natural, eco-friendly and food-safe materials.

Why should I use Beeswax Wraps?

Honey Bee Wraps are beeswax food wraps that prevent an estimated 480 metres of plastic wrap going to landfill and into our oceans per year (based on a family of 4 using 24 packs of 20 metres). This is a great way to reduce food waste as the cotton material allows some of the moisture to escape and your food to breathe which means that bacteria have to work harder to decompose your food; this means that your food should stay fresher for longer wrapped in beeswax food wraps compared to plastic wrap or aluminum foil. We've found that we save money in the long run on our grocery bill as less food is wasted at home by using beeswax food wraps. Beeswax food wraps are biodegradable.

How do I use beeswax food wraps?

Use the warmth of your hands to soften the beeswax wrap, fold it around food or over a container and use your fingers to press and seal. When the wrap cools, it will hold its shape. It is reusable- gently wash by hand with cool water (using a mild soap, if needed) in between uses. Hang to air dry. Store in a cool, dark cupboard or draw- either folded, flat or rolled up.

We have made some How-To videos or you can check our our instagram (@beeswaxcandles_uk). If you scroll down on a individual product page, you will see videos of suggestions on how to use beeswax wraps. Detailed written use and care instructions are included with your purchase.
